Overview of Medicare

What is Medicare?

MEDICARE: THE US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM

Medicare is the Federal Government Health Insurance program for:

  • People 65 years of age and older.
  • Some people with disabilities under age 65.
  • People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant).

Medicare has Four Parts:

  1. Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Most people do not have to pay for Part A.
  2. Part B (Medical Insurance)
Most people pay monthly for Part B.
  3. Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)
Medicare Advantage plans combine your Part A and Part B coverage with prescription coverage (in most cases) and other benefits in one convenient plan.  Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted with Medicare.
  4. Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Part D Rx will help to lower the cost of your prescription drugs.  These plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted by Medicare.
